Deep TMS treatment in San Antonio, TX

What is Deep TMS treatment?

TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, which is a safe, effective, FDA approved, non-invasive, and non-convulsive cutting edge treatment for depression.

Although TMS has been around for many years, Dr. Johnston is proud to be the first provider in San Antonio to offer a newer and more effective form of TMS called Deep TMS by Brainsway. Deep TMS outperformed regular TMS in a head-to-head clinical study with better performance against depression symptoms.

We are paneled with multiple insurance providers who will pay for your TMS treatment to varying degrees depending on your individual plan! We will run a benefits investigation and let you know your out of pocket costs prior to starting.

How does Deep TMS treatment work?

Deep TMS treatment uses magnetic pulses, like those from a MRI machine, to activate several areas of the brain thought to play a role in depression and improve their overall functioning. Compared to regular TMS, Deep TMS uses a H-coil magnet design to reach more surface area of the brain, as well as penetrate to deeper structures within the brain, which likely explains its superior performance when compared to regular TMS.

What does Deep TMS treatment feel like?

You will be awake and alert for the entirety of the treatment session. You will also be able to resume your day, as planned, following the procedure with no effect on your cognitive abilities or alertness. Treatments should not be painful. During the treatment, patients may experience mild muscle twitches in their face and/or jaw-clenching, which is why we offer complementary bite-guards to those who require them. Patients may also experience headaches and mild scalp irritation, but this usually resolves after the first few treatments as the patient’s body becomes more accustomed to the procedure. More serious side effects, like seizures, are rare.
